INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITIES IN SENSOR NETWORKING: DUST, HYPE, FUZZ, AND REALITY

A collaboration of First Analysis, Physical Sciences Inc., and DS3 Partners

By John Dexheimer and Dr. Robert Hannemann

In this white paper, the authors aim to bridge the gap between the grand discussions (bordering on hype) and the minutiae of the existing, fragmented industry and disparate technical issues to provide a survey of relevant markets and technology efforts and to suggest a set of roadmaps with which to look ahead. Sensors provide the next evolution of information systems. With that evolution, new services will be possible, and the existing infrastructure of computing, communications, and data analysis will be extended, morphed, and in many cases re-architected because of the increasing data flows. The major question is when and how to play as an investor or company in these changes -- proactively or reactively, through greenfield developments or the transformation of existing firms that incorporate new technologies or services.
